Anna Gerlach's best life

With her business Indulgence Food Design celebrating 25 years in the Adelaide catering scene, Anna Gerlach reflects on the best things in life.

Describe the best day of your life.
The best days of my life were the two days my two boys were born. When William was born he came out quiet but then spent the first three months screaming the house down and I spent those three months crying, but since then he now makes me laugh with his incredible and witty sense of humour. When Oscar was born, he came out screaming but then he spent the next three months sleeping, in a crib on the dining room table! He is a gentle, beautiful soul!

Describe the best meal you’ve ever eaten.
My grandmother's roast chicken with all her roast vegetables and potatoes. I now mirror that once a week. It’s my favourite comfort meal. I called my grandma Bubba – she was Serbian from the North of Belgrade. She was a local seamstress in her village in the 1950s, her hometown received Western magazines from America with beautiful girls and cars, so my grandfather said: "let’s move there!" They ended up in Canada, where it was too cold, so they migrated to Australia. She passed away at 97 and worked up until three months before her death as a seamstress. She was incredible and I absolutely adored her.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
It is what it is. I read this in a book somewhere and it resonated with me. Don’t overthink it, everyone who knows me knows – that is what I say!

What is the best photograph you have?
I love this photo. It was taken when the boys were three and four. It shows how busy and active they were. And they still are!

What are the best qualities of your favourite person?
Loyalty.
Trust.
Humour.
Kindness.

Best five songs on your Spotify playlist?
Wilson Phillips – Hold On. I love this song, it reminds me of great girl dancing.
Dire Straits – Money for Nothing. My dad loved Dire Straits so I grew up listening to them.
Queen – I Want to Break Free. I grew up with Queen, and in the 80s to get up in a woman’s outfit vacuuming depicted that in a lot of ways the world was changing with sexuality and acceptance.
Flo Rida ft. Sia – Wild Ones. I met her in London, and we were all very wild in our 20s!
Simple Minds – Don’t You (Forget About Me). I loved the movie The Breakfast Club. It was all about teens, confusion, and young love, before you actually knew what the real world was like!

Best-ever purchase?
My Michael Zavros charcoal drawing, the cobra. It was one of the first serious pieces of art that I purchased. For me, it depicts animals and beauty and is an art and animal lover – I absolutely adore it!
