Peter Saturno's best life

In the lead-up to Adelaide Hills Winter Reds, Longview Vineyard director Peter Saturno reflects on the best things in life.

Describe the best day of your life.
In no apparent order ... I would have to choose between my wedding day with Danielle, the births of my two children, and Port Adelaide winning the 2004 premiership.
Most people would pick their wedding day and this would be true for us, too. Our family and friends are extremely important to us and having a big party with your best mates can’t be beaten. It’s a day I've dreamt of since I was a boy because it is a celebration of our lives and the people that frame it. In a way, it is the start of the rest of your life because when children come along, nothing stays the same.

Describe the best meal you’ve ever eaten.
Cotechino and polenta cooked by my Nonna Tarquinia (Queenie). While I do think my Nonna was a great cook, I’m sure most people would agree their grandma’s cooking is pretty special. I love rustic dishes and especially the ones she used to cook. These recipes are generally hard to find in a restaurant – dishes that don’t look attractive but are all about flavour. Cotechino is a peasant dish which looks like a thick German sausage and is boiled for a few hours. It’s quite gelatinous and when served with polenta and cavolo (cabbage) in the winter it will change your life. Queenie (Tarquinia) came from Friuli in Italy and settled in Gumeracha in the Hills when she was eight. We named our Pinot Grigio after her as her home area (Friuli) is the birthplace of Pinot Grigio. She didn’t know much about wine, but when we launched it at her 90th birthday party, she seemed pretty happy.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
"Always be grateful for what you have as there is always someone worse off."
I was told this by a special person who is an inspiration to me both personally and professionally. Despite enduring significant heartache over the years, this person still has so much positivity, happiness, and buoyancy. One can only hope to be more like them.

What is your favourite photograph?
This photograph of my family: my wife Danielle and children Oliver, 7, and Violet, 4 (the loves of my life). This picture was taken by a friend, Kate, who owns and operates Urban Safari studios in Adelaide. It was taken at Longview Vineyard, Macclesfield which of course is very special to us; most of our major family events have taken place here – our wedding, family weddings, and first birthdays. It’s a wonderful space and I'm very proud of everything we do here.

What are the best qualities of your favourite person?
Humility, kindness and humour. The most important people in my life have these attributes, my wife Danielle being one of them. She has a wonderful ability to light up a room, coupled with a quick wit and a huge heart; it makes for a pretty good combination.
